Pichon claims victory in Women’s U19 race
Laly Pichon proved the strongest at the In Flanders Field – Ypres youth day in the women’s U19 category. The French rider claimed a solo victory after the rest of the leading group crashed in the final kilometre. Edda Bieberle and Amandine Jakob completed the podium.
The ninth edition of In Flanders Field – Ypres in the women’s U19 category got underway at 4:30 p.m. The final race of the youth day covered 71 kilometres, with the Scherpenberg, Monteberg and Kemmelberg (Belvédère) serving as the key challenges.
A strong pace was set on the Kemmelberg (Belvédère), significantly thinning out the peloton. A group of twelve riders managed to survive and headed into the run‑in to the finale.
Several riders tried their luck with attacks, but no one was able to break clear. Everything appeared set for a sprint, until a crash occurred on a roundabout one kilometre from the finish. The entire leading group went down, except for Pichon (France National Team).
The French rider avoided the crash and went on to take a solo victory. In the sprint for the remaining podium places, Edda Bieberle (Airtox – Carl Ras) and Amandine Jakob (Germany National Team) proved the fastest.
